Gold never sleeps, but that doesn't mean every hour is worth trading. Most traders lose money on gold because they trade during low-quality sessions. Here's when the professionals actually trade — and when we send our signals.
Gold Trading Sessions Overview
| Session | GMT Time | Quality | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 10 PM - 7 AM | ⭐ Low | Thin liquidity, wide spreads, choppy |
| Tokyo | 12 AM - 9 AM | ⭐⭐ Medium-Low | Some flows from Asian buyers |
| London | 8 AM - 5 PM | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ High | High volume, clean trends |
| New York | 1 PM - 10 PM | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highest | Peak liquidity, major moves |
| London-NY Overlap | 1 PM - 5 PM | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best | Maximum liquidity, tightest spreads |
The Best Hours for Gold Trading
🥇 London-New York Overlap (1 PM - 5 PM GMT)
This is the sweet spot. Both major financial centers are active, creating:
- Maximum liquidity — Orders fill quickly at expected prices
- Tightest spreads — 15-25 cents vs 40-50 cents in Asian hours
- Cleanest price action — Trends develop and follow through
- News catalysts — US economic data releases drive moves
This is when 70% of our signals are sent.
🥈 London Session (8 AM - 12 PM GMT)
Strong second choice, especially the first two hours:
- European institutional flows begin
- Reactions to overnight developments
- Often sets the daily direction
🥉 New York Session (5 PM - 8 PM GMT)
After London closes, NY carries momentum:
- Post-news positioning
- End-of-day institutional adjustments
- Can see reversals or continuations
When NOT to Trade Gold
🚫 Asian Session (10 PM - 7 AM GMT)
Common mistakes traders make here:
- Trading the "range" — Ranges break unexpectedly when London opens
- Tight stops — Low liquidity means price hunts stops both ways
- Overtrading — Boredom leads to bad entries
🚫 30 Minutes Before/After Major News
Gold reacts violently to:
- CPI, PPI, PCE (inflation data)
- FOMC decisions and minutes
- NFP and unemployment data
- Fed chair speeches
We do NOT send signals during these windows. The risk-reward is terrible.
🚫 Friday After 8 PM GMT
Liquidity dies ahead of weekend. Spreads widen, and holding through the weekend adds gap risk.
